A diploma is a milestone. Learning is the measure.
Graduation deserves celebration. But when we assess a school district’s performance, we also need to ask: What can students actually read, explain, calculate, and do?
Graduation rates tell us how many students completed the requirements for a diploma. They do not, by themselves, establish mastery of reading, writing, or mathematics.
For Modesto City Schools, meaningful accountability should include clear answers:
- Where are students starting in literacy and mathematics?
- What improvement is expected—and by when?
- What help reaches students who are behind?
- How will parents see the results?
- What changes when an intervention fails?
The school board’s responsibility includes holding the superintendent accountable for measurable academic progress. Evaluating leadership should connect district goals, resources, and decisions to evidence of student learning.
StanWire will examine academic recovery through that lens: clear goals, understandable evidence, and responsibility for results.
Our students deserve a diploma backed by learning.
